As we age our skin thins due to the progressive loss of proteins such as collagen, elastin, and fibrin. In addition, we lose volume in the face as fat pads decrease in size, ligaments that once supported structures begin to stretch, and bone density decreases. This results in sagging of the skin, fine lines, thicker folds, and shadow casts from underlying volume deficits.
Dermal fillers are typically used to treat volume loss. They come in a variety of thickness depending on what we are treating. Thicker fillers can lift tissue and enhance contour, whereas thinner fillers are used for finer lines, delicate areas and hydrating the skin filler.
